CAE 50th Anniversary Exclusive Leadership Program

Powerful Expressions: A Leadership Program Exclusively for CAEs!

As part of our celebration of the 50th year of the Certified Association Executive (CAE) program, we have enlisted The Banff Centre to create a customized experience exclusively for CAEs, based on their world-renowned leadership programs.

Through a series of three workshops that focus on words, voice, and drama, you’ll explore the leadership qualities within you and develop your ability to communicate powerfully and effectively. How you communicate has a significant impact on what you communicate and what people experience. Explore the power of expression through words, movement, voice, and drama with faculty from the Leadership Development department at The Banff Centre and by master artists.

Discover how to creatively and efficiently articulate your vision and learn to use the creativity and innovation within you to find new and inspired ways to share your thoughts and ideas. You will participate in the modules as part of a smaller cohort, while working together as a larger team that will apply the concepts to the unique challenges faced by associations. Everyone will have the opportunity to participate in the expression sessions in all three workshops.

1. The Write Stuff

Words are a leader’s most powerful tool. Words can express a vision and inspire others to embrace it. Words are the currency of praise, excitement, compassion, and insight. They connect us to one another. When our language is vivid and sprung from deep passions and beliefs, we can move others and inspire change. Learn to harness the power of language to move others.

Written communication is critical to personal and professional success, and this first workshop will focus on writing as a tool to motivate, inform, and engage others. Through a series of writing exercises designed to access your inner sources of creativity, you’ll develop your capacity to powerfully and precisely communicate ideas. You’ll learn to give non-judgmental feedback to one another as part of the editing and revision process. The session’s activities will culminate with you sharing a piece of your powerful writing in front of the rest of the group.

  • Generate new ideas and thinking on subjects of importance
  • Increase your ability to transfer thoughts to paper coherently and efficiently
  • Enhance your writing confidence and competence

2. Acting Like a Leader

You’ve heard that it’s not necessarily what you say, but how you say it and that body language is one of the most powerful forms of communication. The culture of an organization is determined largely by the perceived behavior of its leaders. Explore and develop non-verbal communication skills as critical components of your leadership capacity.

The session begins with brief exercises to connect body, voice, and energy in order to step into your personal power and perform your role in your own unique style. Awareness and presence training, coupled with basic voice work, will support the development of your “authentic voice.” Putting the components of movement and voice together through theatre exercises, this session will conclude with individual presentations to the rest of the group.

  • Develop a more dynamic physical and vocal presence
  • Learn to align your intentions with your authentic voice
  • Enhance your leadership effectiveness by building strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving abilities

3. The Power of Storytelling

The truth about stories is that that’s all we are.” Thomas King (2003)

One of the best ways that leaders bring people with them is through storytelling. Your emotions are triggered, associations are stimulated and memories are activated. Storytelling moves us into that place where we trust what we know, even if it can’t be measured. When you think of any compelling speaker, you think of someone who tells a story to engage an audience and relate it to solid content. Stories exemplify who we are as individuals and what we can become – leaders of ourselves, your team, and your organizations.

  • Communicate your vision, values and message with precision and passion
  • Generate new content on your subject
  • Receive feedback on your style and impact

This session focuses on the power of stories of achievement and vision. You will look to their major sources of inspiration and examine what those individuals do to shape and perform their powerful messages. Using storyboarding, scripting and various rehearsal techniques, you will learn to tell their own stories by exploring their own powerful messages and their palette of performance possibilities. The session will end with you conveying your leadership story using the tools and techniques you practiced throughout the session.
